Sports academy in the North East: a guide to sport and study at Park View

3 min read

Choosing a sports academy means looking at your education and your sporting development together. Park View Academy of Sport is based in Chester-le-Street, County Durham, and offers students aged 16–19 the opportunity to combine their studies with a structured sports programme.

Choose a sport and an education pathway

Start with the sport you want to develop, then explore the qualifications that suit your interests and next steps. The Academy has individual programme pages for football, cricket, rugby, athletics and basketball, where you can find information about coaching, facilities and the application process.

Compare the education options as carefully as the training programme. Park View’s published pathways include A levels, BTEC Level 3 Sport and Active IQ fitness instructing and personal training qualifications. Ask the admissions team which combinations are available for your chosen sport and intended intake.

Understand the training environment

Look beyond a list of facilities. Ask how coaching, strength and conditioning, competition and academic lessons fit into your week. Park View’s programme pages describe these elements and include example timetables where available. An example week is a guide, rather than a guaranteed timetable for every student.

The Academy’s published offer includes strength and conditioning, performance analysis and access to physiotherapy and rehabilitation support. The details vary by sport, so discuss your own training needs with the relevant coaching team.

Look for documented student progression

Individual stories help explain what progression can look like. In May 2022, Durham Cricket reported that Luke Robinson signed an Academy contract while studying at Park View Academy of Sport at the Riverside. Its report describes the role of his training at Park View and the connection with Durham’s pathway.

The Academy also published Emily Bloomer’s move into Durham Women’s PGA Academy in August 2024. These are specific examples of student progression; a professional contract, scholarship or first-team place is not an automatic outcome of joining an academy.

Plan your journey from across the North East

Location matters when you are balancing lessons, training and fixtures. Park View is in Chester-le-Street, and the Academy advertises minibus travel with pick-up locations across the North East. Routes can change, so check the current arrangements for your area directly with the Academy before making plans.

Questions to ask before applying

Which qualifications can I combine with my chosen sport? What are the current entry requirements? How is the week divided between study, training and competition? What costs, kit requirements or financial support apply? What travel arrangements are available from my area? Asking these questions will help you compare options using information specific to your circumstances.

Visit an open event and take the next step

An open event is an opportunity to explore the Academy, meet staff and ask about your sport and education choices. Check the current event details and contact the Academy to confirm availability, entry requirements and arrangements for your intended intake.

International football applicants

If you are exploring a football gap year from overseas, use the international football academy information rather than assuming the domestic 16–19 education route has the same arrangements. Discuss programme length, accommodation, costs and eligibility directly with the team.
